A Narrative Review – PubMed (nih.gov) Emotionally when students feel triggered, they can exhibit poor impulse control and display undesirable behaviors. According to Rolston & Lloyd-Richardson (2022), the term emotional dysregulation is a negative response that attacks your body’s cognition, emotions, physiological barrings, and behavioral responses. There are a host of students who are at risk this academic school year for displaying emotion dysregulation behaviors. Behavioral dysregulation can be observed in students who have a hard time regulating, managing, and controlling their emotions. Such students may be observed displaying behaviors of angry outbursts, anxiousness, sadness, physical /verbal aggression, self-isolating, and self-sabotage. In today’s society, students can arrive at school with a host of concerns extending from adversities that occur in their daily lives. Several environmental factors can impact a student’s ability to become emotionally dysregulated within a school. Research indicates that students who experience parentification and who operate within an adult’s role as a caretaker can often be short-tempered and will quickly emotionally dysregulate (Healthline, 2022). Socially and emotionally a student can develop episodes of stress and anxiety when they are required to pick up children from school, help siblings with homework, do laundry, or work to pay bills. Behaviorally, parentified students can suffer from sleep deprivation, when taking care of their siblings, thus causing them to fall behind on academic responsibilities. This can cause a negative behavioral response within a classroom. Physically the student may complain of headaches or stomach aches. The student may develop socially disruptive or aggressive tendencies towards individuals within a school environment. According to Villines (2019), a student’s limbic system has a set of structures within the brain that plays a significant role when one is emotionally triggered, which causes a student to fight or flight. The fight or flight syndrome is a physiological reaction that shows up when a student feels anxious or scared (Cherry. 2009). Therefore, the initial response of distress can be observed right before a student emotionally dysregulates. Take, for instance, unprepared students that did not do their homework. The students can feel stressed that the teacher will lower their grades. This emotionally distraught feeling can trigger the student to emotionally dysregulate. The student may choose to stay and (fight) through the anxious moment or request to leave (flight) the classroom. Another example is students who encountered academic challenges may avoid answering questions, they will handle stress by finding ways to avoid doing the work and cause a disruption to get removed from the class. In this case, the student is experiencing an emotional stress response. The students’ limbic system is activated and in overdrive. Causing the student to go into hyperarousal due to overstimulation. In other words, this moment is crucial because it is the root cause of distress found in the student’s ability to escape from the learning environment. This behavior is seen when a student lacks understanding of the contextual information, which causes a student to not want to deal with a situation and leave the situation.
